In some areas, multiple tax rates are required to collect and remit the proper tax. Now, you have the ability to let our system automatically look up the tax rate for you. You can also choose to collect tax on a state-by-state basis. International users can take advantage of setting multiple custom tax rates as well. These updates help ensure that you are charging your clients the correct tax rates. Take a look below for a brief walkthrough of the Sales Tax feature!
How to set up the sales tax feature
For step-by-step instructions with screenshots, see the Step-by-Step section at the bottom of this article.
Step 1: Click the Business tab
Step 2: Click the Sales Tax tab
Step 3: Click "Add a State Tax"
Step 4: Choose the Tax State
Step 5: Choose the Tax Mode
Step 6: Enter the Tax Rate, if needed
Step 7: Edit Products, if needed
Step 8: Place a test order
Step-by-step
Step 1: Click the Business tab at the top of the page.
Step 2: Click the Sales Tax tab on the left-hand side of the page.
Step 3: Click the "Add a State Tax" button to create a sales tax rate.
Step 4: In the Tax State drop-down, choose the state that you would like to create this new Sales Tax rate for.
Step 5: In the Tax Mode drop-down, choose the type of tax rate that you would like to set up:
Flat Sales Tax Rate – Enter a flat sales tax percentage to be charged for that state.
Automatic Tax Lookup – The sales tax rate will be determined based on the client’s billing address.
Custom Tax Rate – Allows you to set multiple tax rates.
Step 6: In the Sales Tax Rate box, enter the sales tax percentage that you would like to charge.
Note: when choosing Automatic Tax Lookup, you will not be prompted to enter a tax rate.
Step 7: In the Taxable Overrides column, click "Edit Products." When creating or editing products, you can choose whether a product is taxable. By default, the system uses the product setting, but you can override this on a per-product basis within this window. This is helpful if you have products available in multiple states but only need to charge tax in specific states.
- The green checkmark will override the product default to charge tax.
- The red X will override the product default to not charge tax.
- If neither is selected, the product’s default taxable status will be used.
Step 8: You can now place a test order to see what your client will see regarding Sales Tax. Your client will see the Sales Tax rate in the Payment Information section when placing their order.
Note: the client billing address will be used for sales tax lookup. If you don't want to ask for their address during the order, click here to see how to change your settings.
